Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman was born Natalie Hershlag on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel. With roots in Poland, Rumania, Austria, and Russia, the daughter of Israel immigrants, moved to the USA along with her parents, living first in Washington D.C. and eventually New York. The young Natalie took dancing lessons at age four, then advanced to stage productions, with visions of dancing on Broadway. At age ten, she was discovered by a cosmetic modeling agent who wanted her to be a model, and the young girl took the opportunity to request an introduction to acting scouts. She adopted the stage name, Portman, which was her grandmother's maiden name. Within three years, she was attending school holiday theater camps where she had the chance to perform many roles including Anne, in Anne of Green Gables. At 12, she had the chance to be a professional understudy for an off-Broadway musical, and a year later she won a role in a 1994 film, "The Professional."

Natalie's big break came when she was chosen to be Queen Amidala in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Soon after, she was cast in "Beautiful Girls," and later in a Woody Allen film, "Everyone Says I Love You." She also had a part in Tim Burton's sci-fi flick, "Mars Attacks!" Soon she had the opportunity to play Anne Frank in a Broadway revival of "The Diary of Anne Frank," the decision causing her to have to bypass a chance to appear in the film, "The Horse Whisperer." She performed on Broadway while still in high school, doing eight shows a week while attending classes full-time. It was a role for which she received a Tony nomination. In the 1999 film, "Anywhere But Here," Natalie received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Natalie continued with her studies, eventually entering Harvard where she majored in psychology, graduating in 2003. In 2004, she had starring roles in the independent movies, "Garden State" and "Closer," the latter winning her a Supporting Actress Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In the spring of 2006, Natalie appeared on Saturday Night Live as a hostess of the popular show.

Although Natalie continues to prove herself to be a modest and classy actress, she has nevertheless found herself involved in a few media scrapes and events, once when filming a romantic scene by the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, to the disdain of Orthodox worshippers, and also for upsetting a nervous NYPD cop for driving in a transit tunnel while looking unusual in her shaven-headed condition (which she had adopted for a movie role). Another time she was stalked by photographers leading to allegedly fake Natalie Portman sunbathing photos, but it's the price that's often paid by the famous (privacy being the reason she decided to adopt a different last name in the first place.) Natalie remains one of the top-ranked actresses, who has raised the bar on personal standards from an environmentally conscious stance to being a self-proclaimed animal lover and vegetarian.
