Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1980 in
Manhattan, New York City, to a Jamaican father and an Irish/Italian
mother. Beginning to play instruments at an early age, Alicia began by
learning the classical music of Beethoven and Chopin. An accomplished
pianist, she began to write her own music in her early teens. After
graduating from the Professional Performing Arts School (a public high
school) in New York, she went on to Columbia University on a
scholarship. After deciding that she would risk it all on a
professional musical career, Alicia created a demo under the direction
of Jermaine Dupri on his So So Def label. One early success was a song
that she wrote and recorded ("Dah Dee Dah") which appeared on the
soundtrack for the 1997 film "Men in Black" starring Will Smith.
